The riding year is past half over and we already have two Big Johnson Award nominations. The Big Johnson is the annual Big Sioux Rider club award for the a club member or rider who has the biggest faux pas or crazy motorcycle related experience during the year, hopefully one in which no one was permanently injured.
1. Jim Johnson (award namesake) for forcing all his riding buddies to listen to Helen Reddy songs at 130db at every traffic stop between I-35E and the Minnesota State Fairgrounds in St. Paul. Some believe it was some kind of ritualized punishment of his friends who had working BMWs for the past 6 weeks (vs. Jim and his shinny new 2014 R1200RT which had reverted back to garage queen status for several weeks prior to the rally).
2. South Sioux City Sue, whom after living in Sioux City for years and years, had to ask for directions to Miles for Stan Stille's moving away party. The shame of living a sheltered life... "she" claimed. Meanwhile, nearly every 6 year old in town can tell you its the place they make Charlie Boy sandwiches which is just up the street from the famous Tire Man.
A motorcycle touring and enthusiast club with members from Northwest Iowa, Northeast Nebraska and Southeast South Dakota... near the banks of the Big Sioux River and Sioux City. BMW MOA Chapter #308.

Lunch with the Kids at Crittenton Center Youth Shelter
Its been almost a year since the Big Sioux Riders last ride-in to the Crittenton Center Youth Shelter. Sunday, April 6th the group is scheduled deliver and serve pizza to the kids, and talk to them about motorcycles and motorcycle travel. The time will be 12 noon. The staff is estimating they will have between 17 and 25 kids. You're welcome to bring any motorcycle stuff that would interest them. The idea is just to get them talking about motorcycles and to get their minds off more troubling things for an hour or two. It has turned out to be a pretty good time for everyone during past visits.
We decided last year to give the staff a break and not bring soda with both sugar and caffeine in them anymore. The staff has suggested bringing Sprite, Fanta, root beer and other non-caffeinated beverages. The pizza and soda will be served from the pavilion building in the front lawn area. We pay for the pizza and soda with money from our club treasury.
The address is 3901 Green Avenue, Sioux City, IA. Directions: take the Martha street exit near the Gordon Drive HyVee and head north, after you go around the 90 degree corner near HyVee, the street name changes to Green Ave. The Center is just past the church on the north side of the street.
Also, please consider the following during your travels this summer - its something we have discussed at a few of the club meetings regarding the next Pizza Party. I spoke to one of the staff members at the Center and she liked the idea and said it would be fine. If you already have a lot of motorcycle event t-shirts in the closet and don't need anymore, pick an appropriate small, medium or kid sized t-shirt at different events. If everyone could pick up 2 or 3 t-shirts, we would have enough to hand one out to each kid at the next Pizza party. Getting a cool motorcycle t-shirt will be a big deal to the kids. Plus knowing how many places some of you visit every year (self included), you can't wear them all anyways :)

11th Annual Big Sioux Riders Spring Campout - May 10th - 11th, 2014
Below is a link to the flyer for the 11th Annual Big Sioux Riders Spring Campout on Mother's Day Weekend. We have a couple changes this year. We will be cooking a dinner Saturday evening at the campground. Terry and I have also managed to reserve cabins #1 and #2 next to where we camp for both Friday and Saturday evenings. We plan on getting to the campground Friday afternoon and getting things ready a head of time. If you would like to join us early, please let us know. This is a low key, low cost get together. Please print the flyer out and post it at your local dealership or club message board.

It's almost March, time to wake up the iron
Well it is almost March on the calendar, but the weather reminds us that winter is still here. I just returned from a tour of the south, Florida and Texas. We had "Chamber of Commerce", weather everywhere we went. Even got caught in a thunderstorm during rush hour in Houston, Texas. No, not on a bike. Stopped in many bike shops along the way, and saw many of the new models ready to ride. So, naturally came home to freezing temps and that four letter word, S-N-O-W.
The events calendar is starting to get filled in and I know everybody is jones'n to ride. Time to rack and stack the events for the year.
I do want to mention a few things that are ongoing regardless of the season, just some light housekeeping.
On Saturdays we meet for breakfast at the Garden Cafe in Sioux City, at 8 am.
We are still meeting on the second and fourth Wednesday of the month, at Bak BMW. We had a good turn out this last Wednesday. When the weather clears up it will be a ride night, until then we stayed warn, ate hot dogs and talked bikes, rides and other things. Please plan on attending.
Our regular meeting is on the third Tuesday of the month. The March meeting is planned for March 18th at 6pm. We will meet at the House of Q, so get there early if you want to eat some good BBQ!
Other events:
April 1 to September 30 starts the GLMC grand tour event, more information is on their Web Site
at www.glmc.org
April 6 we will meet at the Crittenton Center, a pizza and bike party for the kids.
April 25-26 is the Blitz to Branson
May 10-11 is the 11th Annual Big Sioux Riders Mothers Day Dam Camp Out
There are many other events coming up, and I will try to get them published on this blog site in the near future as soon as I learn how to use the calendar.
Finally, our best wishes for a speedy recovery to our esteemed Treasurer, Steve Martin. Steve says he feels like he lives the life of a house cat, still mostly at home in his bubble. We know that its for the best right now. Steve also reminds us to "Ride hard and be sure to get lost, that's the best part". With advise like that, I think he wants the Big Johnson Award all to himself, not shared with yours truly......

Happy New Year to ALL
I finally figured out how to post on this blog. Thanks Brion for the help and getting this set up.
I am given to understand that the new year is a time for resolutions. So I might be able to make a few myself.
First and foremost to ride safely this year so I can make the same one next year.
Second, to ride more, to enjoy the trip and not focus on the destination. To take the time to smell the roses along the way.
Third, as I stated at the Christmas Party, try to get as many events posted on a calendar so all can see the upcoming events.
To that end, please remember that we have breakfast, Saturday Mornings at the Garden Cafe, in Sioux City, starting about 8am.Now the location may change but the date won't. Lastly, we meet at Bak BMW the second and fourth Wednesday of each month. Right now because of weather its more fellowship, but as the weather improves, we ride. I will be working on an events calendar this winter, I hope to have it up by March.
Fourth, and lastly, I would like to invite all to join me in as many events as your time will allow. That is something I am looking forward to doing. I hope to see you all down the road. But two things to remember the "Old Sarge" is getting older and his memory was left on a flightline many years ago, along with his hearing. So say hi and speak up.... My Best To All

Wednesday Night Ride/Get Together Jan. 8th 2014
The bi-monthly BSR Wednesday Night Ride/Get Together on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month continues. This ride is hosted by the Bak Family and it starts and ends at Bak BMW Victory KTM. The Baks usually put together and prepare a meal which they pass a hat to pay for. When the weather is not conducive to riding, there will have an activity at the shop. The ride (get together) starts at 6 PM (closing time at the shop so they can participate).
Since it "might" be a little "chili" to ride this Wednesday (January 8th), Katie is making "chili" for anyone who wants come down and try it. Dave is going to previewing a new BMW DVD.

The 2013 BSR Christmas Party Is Today - Tuesday, December 17th!!
The 2013 BSR Christmas Party Is Today - Tuesday, December 17th!!
We have had some cancellations, but have plenty of great food coming. If you did not RSVP it will not be a problem so please come and join us. New members and friends are welcome!!
The party location is the Historic Pierce St. Mansion at 2901 Jackson Street (two blocks east of Pierce St.) in Sioux City. The Big Sioux Rider’s Christmas dinner is free to paid members - $15/person for others. Annual membership is $20 for individual, or $25 for a family. Family members may bring an additional guest (paid). Steve Martin will be collecting member dues for 2014 at the party when you arrive.
This year the entrees will be prepared by Trattoria Fresco (www.trattoriafresco.biz), a local Italian restaurant in Sioux City. The entree dishes are Lasagna, Fettuccine Alfredo, and Pollo Vesuvio (chicken). You don’t need to specify which dish when your RSVP, you can try them all. We are requesting everyone to bring a snack food, desert or a side dish. You will also need to bring your own beverage(s). We will have plates, flatware, cups and coffee available.
We will have the traditional Big Sioux Riders gift exchange so bring a gift costing between $10 and $20. The gifts do not have to be motorcycle related. Bring something fun, useful, or re-gift a stinker.
After dinner the club will vote on the Big Johnson Award and elect 2014 officers. Nominations for officers are currently: Terry Hughes for President and Steve Martin for Treasurer, all other positions are open. If you want to run for office or submit someone, please drop me an email. Nominees have to be living persons and willing to join the club The group is pretty willing to support you if you want to run for a club position for a year.
We are also looking for 2013 Big Johnson Award nominations still. We don’t have any current favorites (besides Terry Hughes), so there is still time to get your nomination in. Nominate for your favorite rider or spouse by sending your nominations to Jim Johnson (jimj@urban-inc.net) and last year's winner Dan Watson (skippy.223@hotmail.com). Please include a short or long explanation about why you think your nominee should win. Non-members from the local/regional motorcycle community can also be nominated.
